Bill Fitzgerald is an American anchor and reporter. He currently serves as an anchor for WTVR/CBC-6 evening News based in Richmond, VA. Prior to that, Bill served as the news anchor for WNCN (NBC-17) along with Melanie Sanders and meteorologist Wes Hohenstein. The team broadcasted the station’s weeknights at 6, 7, and 11 pm. Before that, he worked for MSNBC as their overnight anchor.

Bill left WNCN in December 2008, almost 2 years after joining the station. The reason behind his resignation from the channel was economic downsizing by the parent company Media General. Before joining WNCN, Bill served as an anchor for MSNBC. Prior to joining MSNBC, he served as a weekend anchor as well as a general assignment reporter for WVTM-TV in Birmingham, Alabama ( the NBC-owned-and-operated station). Previously, Bill served as a reporter for the local cable news network News 12 Long Island, New York.

Additionally, he worked as an off-air reporter and associate producer for WVIT-TV ( the NBC owned-and-operated ) in Hartford, Connecticut. Before launching his television career, Bill worked as a teacher in junior high and high school level English in Rome, Italy, and also at Eton College in Great Britain.

Bill has been serving as the evening anchor at WTVR/CBC-6.  As an integral part of the CBS-6 political team, Bill has moderated many election-year debates, such as the US Senate debate in 2014. His other passion apart from journalism is for helping children in the Virginia foster care system. In November of every year, Bill works on the CBS-6 “Hand to Hold” series, where he features a different child every day.

Bill joined WTVR from Raleigh, N.C. where he served as the evening anchor for two years. While there, he covered green issues such as green homebuilding, composting by way of vermiculture, and hybrid vehicles. Prior to that, Bill worked for some years as an overnight and weekend anchor for MSNBC. He covered breaking news as well as top national stories of the day. When former President Gerald Ford died, Bill was on the desk.

Bill was an anchor/reporter at WVTM based in Birmingham, Alabama where he served for five years. While there, he covered schools, politics, crime, and also hurricanes as he anchored the weekend morning shows. During that time, Bill spent ten days in New York City on loan to WNBC while reporting in the wake of 9/11. Also, he went to Texas where he covered the Columbia shuttle disaster.

Bill says he and his family love the Richmond area as an avid history buff and are well-acquainted with its rich trove of museums as well as historical sites. He is an avid cyclist who helps in hosting the Bike MS 150-200 mile ride to Williamsburg and back to Richmond each June.
