Ted Danson  ( Full name: Edward Bridge Danson III) is an American actor and producer. He is best known for playing the lead character Sam Malone on the NBC sitcom Cheers, playing Dr. John Becker on the CBS sitcom Becker, and playing, Jack Holden in the films Three Men and a Baby as well as Three Men and a Little Lady.

Throughout his acting career, Ted has been nominated for 18 Primetime Emmy Awards out of which he has won two. He has been nominated for Golden Globe Awards  11 times out of which he won three. In addition,  Ted holds one Screen Actors Guild Award, and one American Comedy Award, and has also been awarded a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

In TV Guide’s list of the top 25 television stars, Ted was ranked second. Apart from acting, he is a longtime activist in ocean conservation. Ted published his first book titled Oceana: Our Endangered Oceans and What We Can Do to Save Them in March 2011. He co-wrote the book with journalist Michael D’Orso.

In 1983, ratings gradually improved and Cheers was one of the top ten shows on TV by 1986.

He met actress Whoopi Goldberg while a guest on The Arsenio Hall Show in late 1988. He described her as “a sexy, funny woman”. In 1990, they began co-hosting a video guide titled Help Save Planet Earth with an aim of saving the environment. In the video, Ted played himself while  Whoopi played the role of Mother Earth. The two, who had now become best friends become romantically involved while making Made in America in April 1992.

The pairing was heavily featured in gossip tabloids including the National Enquirer. They as well appeared on the Rock the Vote TV special the same year and were set to star in a Paramount-produced version of Neal Barrett Jr.’s Pink Vodka Blues which Marshall Brickman wrote. On October 8, 1993,  Ted experienced negative press attention following his appearance wearing blackface for using a plethora of racist slurs at a Friars Club comedy roast in honor of  Whoopi.

Reportedly, a number of black audience members left mid-performance. Later,  Whoopi defended the sketch stating that she had taken part in writing much of the material and she added that she referred Ted to the makeup artist who painted his face as a societal critique. Ted and Whoopi issued statements emphasizing “the Friars Club tradition of raucous and over-the-top humor.”

The pair described those offended as newcomers who “were uncomfortable with what to expect”. Later,  the performance substantial excerpts were printed in Spy. Ted and Whoopi issued a statement on November 5, 1993, signaling the end of their relationship.
