Rob Fowler is an American meteorologist from the South Carolina Lowcountry. He currently serves as the chief meteorologist for WCBD-TV ( dual NBC/CW+-affiliated television station) in Charleston, South Carolina. Rob joined the WCBD weather team in 1987. Prior to that, he worked for WBAY based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. While working at WCBD, Rob has collected many national awards along the way. He was in Charleston, before, during, and after Hurricane Hugo hit the area in 1989.
Rob gave a special report on the hours leading up to the hurricane as well as on the destruction that was left in its wake. As a cancer survivor, Rob announced that he would shave off his famous mustache in May 2007 to show his support for the American Cancer Society. Although he was not planning on growing it back, Rob agreed to grow the mustache for the 30 days of Men’s Health Awareness Activity in November 2013 well known as “Movember”
In 2006, Rob won the Order of the Palmetto by Governor Mark Sanford. The highest award is given to a citizen in South Carolina. Also, he was nominated for this award by members of the United States Marine Corps due to his tireless efforts to collect and distribute toys for Tots in the Lowcountry every year. He has been serving as the Lowcountry’s Chief Meteorologist at News 2 since September 1987. Before going to Charleston, Rob served at TV Stations based in Savannah, Georgia, and also in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He is an active member of both the National Weather Association as well as the American Meteorological Society. He holds the Seals of Approval from both weather organizations.
After his coverage of Hurricane Hugo, the National Weather Association named Rob the “Meteorologist of the Year.” In 1997, he was recognized as the state of South Carolina Weather Broadcaster of the Year. He also won the Best Meteorologist award in the Carolinas in 2000 presented by the Radio and Television News Directors Association.
Apart from doing weather forecasting, Rob is also very active in the community, he volunteers for many organizations that benefit his community. During his free time, Rob visits thousands of Lowcountry school children every year. He as well hosts school tours of News 2’s state-of-the-art broadcast facility.
