Ed Wilson is an American Meteorology. He currently serves as a weather forecaster at WHO/Channel 13 ( NBC Affiliate) based in Des Moines. Ed has covered Flooding such as The major flood of 1993 which was one of the most important storms of his career. WHO-TV 13 covered the Des Moines Grand Prix and the race track included many of the streets in Des Moines. Many tornado outbreaks have required him to stay in the air for many hours.

Ed’s first major blizzard experience came in 1973 when a blizzard shut down the Grundy Center school system for 2 weeks. By then, he was in the 5th grade. Also, Ed covered Tornado Outbreaks: He has also covered some of the most devastating storms in Iowa’s history. Ed covered The Parkersburg tornado that claimed 8 lives after hitting just 20 miles from his boyhood home. Additionally, Ed reported on the first F5 tornado that produced wind speeds over 200 miles per hour.  The tornado hit Norman, OK in 1993. His team went to Norman to report live from that devastation.

He was a junior in High School working for the Grundy Register to report on the wrestling team. Ed was given the chance to follow the Spartans to Des Moines for state championships. His first job as a weather forecaster was at KIMT based in Mason City.

Ed did weekend weather and also reported three days a week for the CBS affiliate. In September 1988, he was hired as a weekend meteorologist as well as a week-day reporter at WHO-TV 13 based in Des Moines. Later, Ed became the noon and 5 PM meteorologist and also co-anchored the Noon show. He has been serving as the Chief Meteorologist for Channel 13 for the past 17 years. Forecasting Iowa weather for the last 25 years has given Ed the first-hand knowledge that is critical and vital in forecasting one of the most diverse climates in the country.

Ed covered major storms such as the  Ice Storm in  March 1990 that brought down power lines leaving the metro and much of the state in total blackout. Ed also covered Iowa Blizzards. Over the past 22 years. He has forecasted many blizzards that have closed down central Iowa. Both Governor Branstad’s and Culver’s offices asked for his assistance prior to closing Interstates and declaring states of emergency.
