Newfypoo | Poodle Newfoundland Mix | Newfoundland Poodle Mix Introduction
Newfypoo is a large-sized crossbreed created in the early 2000s in the United States by crossing the Newfoundlands with Standard Poodle. Due to their large size, they are not suitable for apartments and Condos. They will be more comfortable in homes that have yards where they can run, stretch, and burn off the excess energy. These are also playful, friendly, good-natured, intelligent, calm, and caring dogs that are naturally protective of their families.
Although, their large bodies acts as a natural deterrence to intruders. The Newfypoos may not make great running partners but they love water activities and they are great swimmers. These dogs are also excellent with children and ideal companions in the therapy world hence they are nicknamed nanny dogs. However, dogs interactions with children should be monitored. There are two size varieties of Newfypoos, Miniature and Standard. Although, they are both large in size as compared to the mini and standard Poodles.
The Newfypoos were created in the early 2000s in the United States by crossing the Newfoundland with Poodle. They were most likely developed for dog owners who love doodle mixes but wanted a dog that is large in size and that’s when the Newfoundland came in. The Newfypoos are affectionate and intelligent dogs with boundless energy. Therefore, they may be too much to handle for novice owners.
Newfypoo Lifespan | Mini Newfypoo Lifespan
A study carried out in 2006 concluded that hybrid dogs tend to live for a year or two than their pure bred parents. Newfoundlands have a lifespan of 8 to 10 years while the Standard Poodles have a lifespan of 11 to 13 years. Therefore, Newfypoos have a lifespan of 8 to 13 years.
The Newfypoos may have a straight, wavy, or curly coat. The thick curly coat needs regular brushing to prevent matting and tangling. They will also require regular coat trims. The straight or wavy coat is also thick and will need regular brushing.
The Newfypoos coat tend to attract grime and dirt hence need a bath every 4 to 6 weeks using a canine shampoo and conditioner. Make a habit of brushing the curly or wavy coat before a bath to remove mats that tends to get messier when wet.
Trim the nails fortnightly using grinder or nail clippers to prevent overgrowth, splitting, and cracking. Brush the teeth of Newfypoos at least twice a week if not daily to remove tartar buildup using a tasty canine toothpaste that may be liver or poultry flavored with a finger toothbrush. The Newfypoos have floppy ears with thick hairs that need cleaning at least once a week using cotton balls soaked in an ear cleanser solution.
Newfypoo Haircuts | Grooming Styles
A Newfypoo that inherits the thick double coat of a Newfoundland will require no haircuts apart from trimming the hair on the paws for traction. This is because the coat acts as an insulator against extreme heat or cold weather. However, a thick and curly coated Newfypoo will need a haircut. Some of the suitable grooming styles for Newfypoos include:
The Puppy Cut – To achieve this haircut, the body fur is trimmed to a length of one inch. However, the hair on the head and tail is left a little longer. A puppy cut is easily maintained at home.
The Lion Cut – The hair on the shoulders, head, neck, and the front legs is left longer while the rest of the body is clipped short.
Teddy Bear Cut – The hair on the body is trimmed to a length of two inches or so while the fur on the face is left longer and trimmed in a circular manner to get a teddy bear look.
The level of shedding for Newfypoos depend on the coat type and the poodle lineage in the hybrid. Generally, Newfypoos will shed less as compared to the Newfoundland parent but will tend to shed a bit as compared to the Poodle. Furthermore, first generation (F1) Newfypoos will tend to shed a bit as compared to F1B which is 75% Poodle and 25% Newfoundland. F1BB Newfypoos will also shed considerably less as compared to F1B. This is because they have 87.5 % Poodle lineage and 12.5 % Newfoundland lineage.
Newfypoo Hypoallergenic | Mini Newfypoo Hypoallergenic
There is no 100% hypoallergenic pure breed or cross breed. Although, dogs are regarded allergy friendly if they shed less and produce less dander. A Newfypoo will likely be more tolerable to allergy sufferers if it has more Poodle Lineage as compared to Newfoundland. This is achieved by backcrossing the F1 Newfypoos to the Poodle parent to get F1B. If F1B is backcrossed to the Poodle parent to get F1BB it is more likely to shed less and produce less dander hence it is tolerable by people who suffer from dog allergies.
Newfypoo Training | How To Train A Newfypoo
The Newfypoos are easily trainable dogs since they are intelligent and eager to please their owners. Start teaching these pets the desirable canine behaviors immediately they join you home before they get inclined towards bad habits. Remember to also teach proper leash manners putting their adult size into consideration. Keep the training sessions short, lively, and challenging for a span of 5 to 10 minutes to discourage boredom and distraction.
Give treats and interactive toys as a way of encouraging positive behaviors. Although playtime, verbal praise, and petting will also come in handy. Avoid use of harsh correction methods like beating, yelling, shoving, punching, or kicking the dog. Socialize the Newfypoo by exposing it to a wide variety of people, animals, surfaces, places, situations, smell, sight, and sounds like lawn mowers, washing machines, door bells, vacuum cleaners, sirens, and whistles.
Start teaching basic command words like come, sit, stay, lie down, heal, etc. from when a Newfypoo joins your home from the age of 8 weeks. Effectively housebreak Newfypoos by creating a feeding schedule, potty training, and crate training.
