Marjane Satrapi Parents

Marjane Satrapi was born in an upper-middle-class Iranian family in Rasht, Iran. Her father worked as an engineer while her mother was a dress designer, the two were Marxists who loved the good life. Satrapi’s parents campaigned against the last Shah and hoped for an Islamic revolution. She is known to be a descendant of Iranian aristocrats. Nasser-al-Din Shah is her maternal great-grandfather who served as Persian emperor from 1848 to 1896. In addition, Satrapi holds French-Iranian nationality and is fluent in Persian, French, English, Swedish, German, and Italian.

She was first married to an Iran-Iraq War veteran Reza at the age of 21. The two later divorced. She is now hitched to a Swedish husband Mattias Ripa. The two reside in Paris.
