Lester Holt ( Full name: Lester Don Holt Jr.) is an American journalist. He currently serves as a news anchor for the weekday edition of NBC Nightly News and Dateline NBC. Lester became the permanent anchor of NBC Nightly News on June 18, 2015. He assumed this role following the demotion of Brian Williams. Lester became the first African-American to solo anchor a weekday network nightly newscast.
In so doing, he followed in the career footsteps of an ABC News evening co-anchor called Max Robinson. Lester is well known for his moderation of the first USA Presidential debate of 2016. He was so much praised by The Washington Post columnists for his role in fact-checking false statements. During the Tom Brokaw era and Brian Williams era for over 30 years, NBC Nightly News was the top-ranked evening news program. However, the ratings dropped to second place after Lester took over as the anchor.
