From 1993 to 2010, Jim played for the Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, St. Louis Cardinals, California/Anaheim Angels, and Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball (MLB).

The California Angels selected Jim in the seventh round of the 1988 Major League Baseball draft. However, he fell in the draft because of a shoulder injury he had in his senior year of high school. They signed Jim to the Angels’ A-Short Season affiliate, Bend Bucks (in Bend, Oregon), in the Northwest League after the draft. He played in 35 games in 1988 for the Bucks and hit .221. In 1989, Jim was promoted to the team’s Class-A affiliate, the Quad Cities Angels in the Midwest League where he played in 31 games and hit .261.
Jim then advanced to a “High-A” team in the California League called the Palm Springs Angels in 1990 where he played 91 games and hit .293. He also played for Palm Springs during the 1991 season. Jim was promoted to Double-A in 1992 with the Midland Angels in the Texas League. He hit .313 in 70 games for Midland. He qualified for promotion again in 1992, moving up to Triple-A Edmonton Trappers for 50 games. The Angels changed Triple-A teams in 1993, so Edmonds played for Vancouver Canadians.
He was then traded for second baseman Adam Kennedy and pitcher Kent Bottenfield from Anaheim to St. Louis shortly before the 2000 season kicked off. He predominantly played center field throughout his career. However, as a result of an injury to a starting first baseman, Jim played first base in stretches.

His other memorable catch came on July 16, 2004, when playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, Jim covered center field against Reds batter Jason LaRue who hit a deep shot to center field. In addition, he made a diving, game-saving catch during the 2004 NLCS against the Houston Astros.
