However, in 1966, Jim was enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served until 1970. During his four years of service, he was assigned to the Army Security Agency which included a tour of duty with the 199th Infantry Brigade between 1967 to 1968 during the Vietnam war.
Following his discharge from the Army, Jim resumed his radio work working for various radio stations including WRC, WTOP, and WGAY. In 1980, he took a job at WCFL in Chicago as the host of the morning drive. While working there, Jim landed his second job in the afternoons at CNN as a Chicago Bureau reporter.
Additionally, he was also the primary guest host of The Larry King Show before he got a slot for hosting his own show on Westwood One. Moreso, his show was aired Monday through Friday from 10:00 PM to 1:00 AM Eastern Time.
