Aisha Harris Dolly Parton
When she was a black writer for Slate.com, somehow Aisha convinced her editors to spring for a trip to Pigeon Forge. it included two tickets to Dolly’s Dixie Stampede. Aisha hunted for offense in the “Deep South.” Aisha wrote “It’s a lily-white kitsch extravaganza that play-acts the Civil War but never once mentions slavery,” of the long-running dinner show, “Instead, it romanticizes the old South, with generous portions of both corn on the cob and Southern belles festooned in Christmas lights.” She unimaginatively and predictably linked Dixie Stampede to Nazism referring to the Broadway play-within-a-play “Springtime for Hitler.”
Aisha Harris Santa Claus
She wrote a piece for Slate in December 2013. The piece examined the cultural origins of Santa Claus. Aisha suggested that the near-ubiquitous representation of Santa as white could be eschewed in favor of a wider symbol, such as an animal. In response to Aisha’s piece, Megyn Kelly, the Fox News anchor responded by asserting on her program The Kelly File that “Santa just is white”. Megyn stated that the same was true for Jesus Christ.
Megyn’s comments drew heavy criticism from different news outlets. In response, Megyn accused Aisha of her criticizers of “race-baiting”. Later, Aisha appeared on CNN and criticized Megyn’s response to the initial backlash. She stated that Megyn’s statements simultaneously played the role of victim and downplayed the comments as a joke after the fact.
