Hansen had served as host of the show for over 20 years before she was succeeded by Audie. On December 18, 2011, during the broadcast of Weekend Edition, Audie announced that she would be leaving the program in January 2012. She said that she would become the co-host of All Things Considered during the 2012 election year.
She would be replaced on January 8 same year by Rachel Martin.
