Mickey Redmond (Full Name: Michael Edward Redmond) is a popular Canadian retired professional hockey player. He now works as a color commentator for Detroit Red Wings games on television for Bally Sports Detroit. In 1972 and 1973, Mickey became the seventh player in NHL history and the number one Red Wing player to earn fifty goals in one season.

He completed a career year with 52 goals (surpassing Gordie Howe’s team record of 49) and 93 points. His record would stand until John Ogrodnick tallied 55 goals during the 1985 season. His success continued, and Mickey became only the third player (after Bobby Hull and Phil Esposito) to get back to back fifty goal seasons with 51 goals (such as an NHL-leading 21 power-play goals).

Early Life And Education

Mickey was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Canada to his parents May and Eddie Redmond. His dad Eddie was an Allan Cup winner and a senior player who came to Peterborough to coach and play with the Sr. B team. He has a brother named Dick Redmond who was also an NHL defenceman. His brother played minor ice hockey in Peterborough and relocated to the 1962 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament together with his youth team. Dick completed his career with the Boston Bruins.

After completing his primary and high school education, Mickey attended and graduated from Kenner Collegiate Vocational Institute and Intermediate School.

During the 1974–75 season, he sustained a back injury and played only 29 games. Mickey’s back woes continued the next year; after 37 games he retired early at 28. In 1973 he was named to the league’s First All-Star Team, the Second Team in 1974, and in 1974, he played in one All-Star Game.
