Pomapoo | Toy Poodle Pomeranian Mix Introduction
Pomapoo ( also known as Poodle Pomeranian Mix, Pomeranian Poodle Mix, Pooranian, Pomeroodle, or Pompoo) is a toy -sized designer dog created by crossing the Pomeranian with a Toy Poodle. Both parents are small-sized weighing around 7 pounds. However, Full-grown Pomapoos may weigh 5 to 15 pounds with majority weighing less than 15 pounds.
As a crossbreed and not pedigree, it is difficult to predict the appearance of the Pomapoos. Some may closely resemble the Pomeranian while others will look like the Toy Poodle. Although, some may have characteristics of both parents. The Pomapoo may have a black, brown, red, sable, cream, or a combinations of color. The coat may be dense and wavy.
These designer dogs are eager to please, intelligent, and eager to learn new tricks. However, the Pomapoos that get the traits of a Pomeranian may tend to be wary with strangers. These dogs make excellent pets for adults, seniors, and home with kids. However, due to the diminutive size, it is important for families that have kids to avoid rough-housing.
Pomapoo Origin | History
The Pomapoos were created in North America most likely in the 1990s by crossing Pomeranians with Toy Poodles. However, there is a possibility this designer may have naturally existed before deliberate crossing started. Breeders may have crossed the two breeds with an aim of minimizing the health issues associated with pure breeding.
They also wanted an affectionate and intelligent companion dog. As a crossbreed and not pedigree, Pomapoos are not recognized by AKC. However, they have been recognized by the Designer Breed Registry, American Canine Hybrid Club, the International Designer Canine Register, and the Designer Dogs Kennel Club.
Pomapoo Lifespan
Hybrids tend to live longer for a year or two according to a study conducted in 2006. Pomeranians have a lifespan of 12 to 16 years while Toy Poodles have a lifespan of 12 to 18 years. Therefore, Pomapoos may have a lifespan of 12 to 18 years.
Pomapoo Grooming
Pomapoos may have a wavy and dense coat which is a combination of Pomeranian and Poodle coat. Wavy coats require brushing several times a week. Some Pomapoos may have a curly coat like the Poodle which requires daily brushing to prevent matting even if they shed very little. The Pomapoos that have a straight coat like Pomapoos will shed all-year round at moderate levels and heavily once or twice a year.
Weekly brushing will suffice to remove the dead hair. However, daily brushing is key during the heavy shedding season. Pomapoos will need a bath every 6 to 8 weeks unless they roll off in something messy. Remember to brush the wavy and curly coats before bathing the dog since mats get messier when wet. Use a hypoallergenic shampoo and conditioner to bathe and moisturize the coat.
Pomapoos should have their nails trimmed every 3 to 5 weeks to prevent overgrowth, splitting, and cracking. Brush the teeth of a Pomapoo at least twice a week if not daily to remove tartar buildup using a poultry-flavored toothpaste and toothbrush. Clean the Pomapoos ears once a week using cotton balls dampened in an ear solution to remove dirt and excess wax.
Pomapoo Haircuts | Haircut | Grooming Styles | Haircut Ideas
For easy maintenance, the coat of a Pomapoo is trimmed every 6 weeks. Some of the suitable haircuts for Pomapoos include:
Teddy bear cut – to achieve this grooming style, the fur on the body is trimmed to a length of about 2 inches. The fur on the face is left a little longer and trimmed in a circular manner to get a teddy bear look.
Puppy cut – this is one of the haircut that is easily maintained at home. The fur on the body is clipped to length of one inch while the hair on the head and tail is left a little longer.
Lion cut – To achieve this cut, fur on the neck, head, chest, and front legs is left longer to form a ruff or a mane. However, the fur on the hind legs, tail, back, and body is trimmed short. However, daily brushing is a must around the mane to prevent matting. If wearing a lion cut, Pomapoos will need a sweater or sunscreen if exposed to extreme cold and heat respectively.
Pomapoo Shedding
The level of shedding depends on the type of coat that a Pomapoo has. Curly-coated Pomapoos will shed very little all-year round while wavy coated Pomapoos will shed at low to moderate levels. However, Pomapoos that have a straight coat like the Pomeranians will tend to shed heavily once or twice a year and moderately all-year round.
Pomapoo Hypoallergenic
A Pomapoo that has a poodle-like coat, tight and curly will be tolerable for people who suffer from dog allergies. However, Pomapoos that have a wavy or straight coat tend to shed a bit hence not suitable for allergy sufferers. Although, there is no dog that is truly hypoallergenic hence parents should spend lots of time with a Pomapoo before adopting to ensure the dog triggers no allergies.
How To Train A Pomapoo Puppy
The Pomapoos are intelligent dogs that are eager to learn new tricks making them highly trainable. They also need early training to learn acceptable canine behaviors before they get inclined towards bad habits. Keep the training sessions short, upbeat, and interesting to avoid boredom and distraction. Make use of treats, interactive toys, verbal praise, petting, and playtime to encourage positive behaviors. Yelling or shouting scares the dogs hence they shut down during training.
Socialization is key to raising well-mannered and well-adjusted Pomeranians. This training will also be beneficial for Pomapoos that are a bit wary of strangers like their Pomeranian parents. To socialize Pomapoos, expose them to a wide variety of people, places, situations, experiences, sight, smell, surfaces, and sounds such as door bells, whistles, washing machines, baby crying sounds, vacuum cleaners, sirens, and lawn mowers.
Enrolling Pomapoos in a puppy class will also serve as a form of socialization. Teach Pomapoos basic command words like come, sit, stay, lie down, heel, etc. from when they join you home. Effectively housebreak Pomapoos by creating a feeding schedule, potty training, and crate training. Potty training starts from the age of 8 weeks with frequent potty breaks every 1 to 2 hours.
