In addition, Demings launched Operation Free Palms, a project that focuses on renewing Orlando’s most crime-ridden housing complex, the Palms Apartments. By focusing on unconventional strategies like access to childcare, a GED program, building playgrounds, and job skills training, OPD created an alternative to crime and improved the quality of life in Orlando’s most affected community.
