He made the decision after he noticed that the majority of the writers wrote about rock music only despite the fact that Houston is a cornerstone of southern rap music. His Houston Press piece Trae Tha Truth’s ban from a Houston radio station and rapper’s subsequent lawsuit against the station was Shea’s first work that drew national attention. This piece gave him a chance to earn a place at the Houston Press’ sister publication called the LA Weekly.
The pieces he wrote about his children and stories about the songs played at his school dance as well as birthday party continued to earn him national attention. Shea wrote a humor piece that described having sex with his wife while listening to Drake. Molly Lambert, a Grantland writer saw the piece and passed it to her editors. The editors later invited Shea to freelance for them.
