He has won several awards including Hatch Broadcasting Award (for a Converse shoe commercial featuring Too Much Coffee Man), Eisner Award for Best Humor Publication: I Thought You Would Be Funnier, (Boom! Studios) in 2011.

He began cartooning while at UC Berkeley. Shannon started by publishing his daily gag cartoons Calaboose and then Tooth and Justice in The Daily Californian. He relocated to Austin, Texas in the 1990s. Shannon had visited the state multiple times as a child to see family. While in Austin, he continued Tooth and Justice for the University of Texas student paper called The Daily Texan. Shannon edited that strip and published other daily cartoons with the paper, with titles such as Life and Times and Interlude.
He created a collection of his daily strips, the satirical superhero Too Much Coffee Man in 1991 to star in a minicomic promoting Children with Glue. In the same year, the popularity of Too Much Coffee Man resulted to the character starring in a weekly comic strip. The character appeared in a series of self-published magazines, comic books, zines, and webcomics for some years.
In 1998, Shannon relocated to Portland, Oregon, and Dark Horse Comics (based nearby) started publishing TMCM collections. Both Shannon and Daniel Steven Crafts co-produced the Too Much Coffee Man Opera (in one act) in 2006. This was followed by Too Much Coffee Man Opera, The Refill (in two acts) which was published in 2008. In 2011, Dark Horse released the ultimate TMCM collection, the Too Much Coffee Man Omnibus. In the following year, BOOM! Studios released Too Much Coffee Man: Cutie Island and Other Stories.

Shannon served as a contributor to many of the Idiot’s Guide books from 2004 until 2008. His weekly strip Postage Stamp Funnies continued to appear in the satirical newspaper The Onion until 2009.
