After graduating from Trinity College, Cambridge, Anthony started working as a freelance writer and book reviewer for The Independent. While there, the appointed his deputy literary editor in 1989. Then, they appointed him film critic for The Independent on Sunday in 1991.
In 20001, he won the National Magazine Award for Reviews & Criticism, for three of his New Yorker articles.
