From there, Eric turned to poster art where he created flyers on local political issues. At the same time, he worked as a tenant organizer. His images were done in a striking black-and-white style. They were reminiscent of Masereel and other 1930s expressionist illustrators. Those images were widely copied and reused by others. Sometimes, they were used for unrelated purposes such as advertising concerts. The images became popular enough that Eric could make a small income selling artwork on the street.

He currently serves as a frequent cover artist for The New Yorker. Eric has created dozens of the New Yorker’s most memorable covers. Eric’s paintings and drawings explore the metropolis from a native perspective. His experiences radicalized him with the police during the 1980s, due to their actions against squatters in the rapidly gentrifying Tompkins Square Park area.

There was increasing intolerance of unlicensed street artists and musicians. Eric’s published work appeared for the first time in leftist magazines such as The Nation, The Progressive, and different underground publications such as Screw. Later, he appeared in mainstream publications such as Newsweek, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal.

Also, his paintings would appear on dozens of covers of The New Yorker. After Seth Tobocman and Peter Kuper founded World War 3 Illustrated they shared Eric’s political beliefs and graphic approach. Eric became one of the magazine’s co-editors and frequent contributors. He eventually started to sell illustrations to more mainstream publications. Also, when his short story “L” appeared in Heavy Metal, Eric became more widely known as a cartoonist.
