Following his retirement from the field, Rick became an assistant coach with the Detroit Shock of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) under Pistons teammate and head coach Bill Laimbeer. In 2006 and 2008, Rick was part of the  WNBA Championship teams.  Eventually, he become the head coach of the Shock prior to becoming the head coach of Trilogy of the BIG3. In this position, Rick led the team to the inaugural BIG3 Championship in 2017. He became the only one in history to have won a championship in the NBA, WNBA, and BIG3.

As a result, Rick was made the second pick in the expansion draft and the Timberwolves picked him first. As the draft was happening, the Pistons were conducting their victory celebration in Detroit.

During the festivities, Rick was taken aside so he could be told. Jack McCloskey, Piston’s general manager tried to reacquire Rick to no avail. Years later in 2014, the story of the trade brought Rick to tears during the ESPN film about the team and this showed that he was still bothered by what transpired.

It turned out that Rick would never play for Minnesota. He ended up being traded instead to the Philadelphia 76ers after he refused to report to the Timberwolves. While with Philadelphia, Rick teamed up with superstar Charles Barkley although they previously had rivalries. The pair form the top-rebounding duo of “Thump N’ Bump.”

Rick moved to the Italian Serie A for the 1991–92 season after two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers. Later, he played for the New Jersey Nets for four seasons prior to returning to the Pistons in 1996–97 under coach Doug Collins.  Rick retired from basketball after a second stint with the 76ers following the 1999 season.
