Family
Kuang was born in Guangzhou, China in May 1996. When she was four years old, Kuang’s family immigrated to the United States. Her mother who grew up in Hainan province coached her not to speak of the Communist Party and not to write about its oppressive regime. Kuang’s father grew up in Leiyang, in Hunan province and her maternal grandfather fought for Chiang Kai-shek.

In 2016, she graduated from the Odyssey Writing Workshop, and in 2017, she attended the CSSF Novel Writing Workshop.
Moreover, Kuang graduated from Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service in June 2018 and had her summer coaching a debate camp in Colorado. In subsequent years, Kuang pursued her academic endeavors at Magdalene College, Cambridge, supported by a 2018 Marshall Scholarship, culminating in the attainment of a Master of Philosophy in Chinese Studies.
Kuang undertook studies at University College, Oxford, achieving an MSc in Contemporary Chinese Studies during her tenure. In addition, she returned to the USA in the fall of 2020 where she had her PhD in East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University.

Babel is Kuang’s fourth novel which she released in August 2022 and it is set in 1830s England. The book is about British imperialism, capitalism, and the complicity of academia. Babel’s plot is focused on four new students at the institute, their growing awareness that their academic efforts maintain Britain’s imperialist supremacy, the use of violence, and also debate over how to prevent the Opium War. Additionally, Kuang’s book has 545 pages published by Harper Voyager.
Yellowface
Yellowface is Kuang’s book published in 2023 where it was described as a satire of racial diversity in the publishing industry. She took the book’s inspiration from her own experiences as an Asian American author.
Katabasis
Katabasis is a new book that Kuang is set to publish on August 26, 2025. The book is about the story of a hero’s descent into the underworld. In addition, two academic rivals from Cambridge must travel to hell to rescue the soul of their advisor.
Poppy War
The Poppy War is Kuang’s first novel which she published in 2018 and is derived from plot and politics from mid-20th-century China.
