Rana is also the author of “Gujarat Files: Anatomy of a Cover Up” an investigative book. In this book, Rana documented the verbatim transcripts of recordings, made using a concealed recording device, of several bureaucrats and police officers of Gujarat.

This recording was made in the course of an undercover investigation to disclose the views of bureaucrats and police officers on the post-2002 Gujarat riots and Police encounter killings. Rana had been posing as ‘Maithili Tyagi’, a student of the American Film Institute, having an ideological affinity for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s beliefs, to empower her to make the recordings.

In November 2013, Rana’s boss Tarun Tejpal, the editor-in-chief and major shareholder of Tehelka became accused of sexual harassment by one of his journalist subordinates. She resigned from Tehelka in protest against the organization’s handling of the charge against Tejpal. Rana now works independently.
