At the end of the game season, he was a free agent and announced that he would sit out at the beginning of the 2009 season to spend more time with his family. However, the Boston Red Sox signed him for a minor-league contract on August 5, 2009. On August 30, 2009, he played against the Toronto Blue Jays in six winnings, 3 hits, 3 walks.
Furthermore, the San Francisco Chronicle accused him of using HGH on October 21, 2007. The paper accused him of spending $24,850 on HGH and syringes from 2002 to 2005 but Paul claimed he was being treated for a tumor on his pituitary gland. It was later found that he had begun taking the HGH before the pituitary gland condition. A Florida dentist whose dental license had been suspended for fraud and incompetence was the one who had prescribed the drug for him.
