He attended and graduated from Detroit Henry Ford High School in 1975. Gregory joined Michigan State being brought by Gus Ganakas, who left the head coach position after his freshman season. During his tenure, he joined the Spartans squad and ranked up a 25–5 record, the Big Ten Conference title, and a berth in the 1978 NCAA tournament. Further, as a senior student, he led the team to the 1979 NCAA tournament championship along with Johnson. Gregory became a 2-time Academic All-American and still remains as the only player in Spartan basketball history, to score over 2,000 points with over 1,000 rebounds.

He was first drafted in the 1979 NBA draft first round in fourth overall pick by Detroit Pistons. He played as a small forward for the team untill 1981. Gregory was later traded for Vinnie Johnson in 1981 to the Seattle SuperSonics. Moreover, he spent two-game seasons with the team from 1981 to 1983. Later he spent a season with the San Diego Clippers from 1983 to 1984.

In 1985 he played for Indiana Pacers for some time. He announced his retirement while at the station. Additionally, he retired with 2961 points 1402 rebounds, and 411 assists.
