The journalist started his broadcasting career at KTIL in his hometown of Tillamook, Oregon at the age of 16. Lars learned his trade under Mildred Davy. Later, he became an announcer at Eugene-based KWAX. The journalist attended the University of Oregon in Eugene from 1977 to 1979 but quit after a year to work in radio and television.

From 1977 to 1978, the journalist served as a news director for KATR in Eugene and later joined KBDF where he worked from 1978 to 1979. At the same time, Lars had internships at KEZI television and KPNW radio. He then became a news director at KZEL in Eugene prior to moving to KJRB in Spokane, Washington in 1979 where he served as a reporter.

Lars took classes at Gonzaga University while working in Spokane. The journalist relocated to Portland, Oregon in 1980 and joined   KXL where he did the afternoon news. Lars moved back to Eugene in 1983  and became a reporter, eventually anchoring for KVAL-TV. In 1985, he went back to Portland to join KPTV as a reporter for The 10 O’Clock News. Lars hosted a weekend talk show on KEX in 1988 but later transferred to KGW, where he worked from 1989 to 1991.

Lars Larson Radio Station

The journalsit left KPTV station in November 1988 due to pressure from the station management over his other role as an outspoken radio talk-show host on KXL. KPTV management viewed Lars’  radio talk-show role as a conflict of interest with his news anchoring role. Later, the journalist started working at KOIN TV where he hosted a morning program called The Buzz until 2000.

His show started airing on nine radio stations (currently 22) on January 31, 2000, through “The Radio Northwest Network”. Two years later, Lars was listed as the most important radio host of 4,000 nationwide in Talkers Magazine’s Heavy Hundred for the first time. He then started filling in for Talk Radio Network talk host Michael Savage in July 2003.

Westwood One Radio Network hired Lars on August 14, 2003, to host his own show for national syndication.  On September 1, 2003, the show officially debuted on Westwood One with 105 affiliates and grew to 175 affiliates. However,  Westwood One canceled the show on March 19, 2009. On  March 30, 2009, the show was re-launched on newly formed Compass Media Networks.

Lars Larson Northwest Podcast

Lars helped to create the KPTV news magazine program called Northwest Reports in 1992. The program was a weekly one-hour show which aired for the first time in September of the same year. KPTV had previously aired documentaries or investigative stories since at least 1990 under the name “Northwest Reports with Lars Larson.” Those documentaries would be as segments within regular newscasts or occasionally as one-time specials but not as a regular program.

Lars Larson Portland

Lars was both executive producer and on-air anchor for the new weekly show. Although it was a “60 Minutes-style investigative show” it mainly focused on the Portland area and the Northwest. The program investigated certain local banks and aired a story that exposed careless handling of customers’ private financial information. This story won the program a regional Emmy Award.

The program lasted more than four years prior to its cancellation in fall 1996. Following the cancellation of the program, Lars resumed anchor duties on KPTV’s 10 O’Clock News. He moved back to KXL in 1997 as a host of a talk show called The Lars Larson Show. The show aired from noon to 4 p.m.
