Khaled Hosseini is a famous Afghan-American writer and retired physician. He is now the UNHCR Goodwill Envoy. In 2003 Khaled published his first novel The Kite Runner. His works have educated many readers about Afghanistanians and their culture. The fruitfulness of his first novel made him retire from medicine to focus on being a full-time writer.

His other books have all achieved several levels of crucial and marketable success. On May 21, 2013, Khaled’s book, And the Mountains Echoed was released. Besides writing, Khaled has been a campaigner for helping refugees, such as beginning the UNHCR and the Khaled Hosseini Foundation to assist Afghan refugees come back home. His book The Kite Runner was converted into a 2007 movie where Marc Forster was the director.

Family Life And Education

He was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, to his parents Nasser Hosseini and Maimoona Hosseini. Khaled’s dad was a diplomat for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul while his mom worked at a girls’ high school as a Persian language tutor. His parents originated from Herat. Khaled’s maternal family is thought to hail from Mohammadzai which is a Pashtun tribe. He has five siblings. His sister, Raya, mostly faced discrimination because of being female.

Khaled and his family relocated to Iran in 1970 where his dad served in Tehran for the Embassy of Afghanistan. In 1973, his family came back to Kabul, and his youngest brother was born in July 1973. In 1976, when Khaled was 11 years old, his dad got a job in Paris, France, and the family moved there. When he first came to the United States, he was 15 years old and could not communicate in English.

In 1984, Khaled graduated from high school and attended Santa Clara University, where in 1988 he received a bachelor’s degree in biology. In 1989, Khaled joined the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine, where he received a medical degree in 1993. He finished his residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and served as an intern between 1996 and 2004.
