Keahi Tucker Hawaii News Now| KGMB | Hawaii

The fall of 2015 marks Keahi’s first decade on the anchor desk at KGMB/HNN. His first job as a TV reporter was at Honolulu Hale following his graduation from Waimea High School and UH Manoa. While there, Keahi covered council meetings for a cable TV news program. Later, he secured an internship at KHON-TV. Keahi’s actual job was at KGMB-TV where he served as an associate. While there, he had 7-bucks an hour to make phone calls, write short news clips, edit videos, and also fetch coffee for the anchors. From there, his dream came true.

The news director during that time refused to make Keahi a full-time reporter because of his accent – a local-haole, semi-pidgin who surfer staccato from Kauai. Instead, the director sent Keahi to the most non-Hawaii place in the country, such as Topeka, Kansas. His new station was literally in the middle of a cornfield. Keahi was a rookie reporter for six months covering tornados and grain prices. Later, the main anchor at the station quit and Keahi was the only other on-air guy at the station and the director had no choice but to give him a shot.

That’s where he learned not to scratch himself, or cuss on air. His lesson in Anchoring 101. Keahi traded the farm fairs of Topeka for the drive-by shootings and national politics of Washington D.C., after a few years in Kansas. This is the country’s 8th largest TV market. On the day of the 9/11 attacks, his station sent him downtown and Keahi spent that miserable day calling in reports from the State Department, the White House, and also from several hotels that had been emptied out as a result of bomb threats.

After that, he moved to a station in Baltimore and was given an overseas assignment to cover the 2004 Olympics, in Greece. After the games,  Keahi had a few bites from New York, but his heart wasn’t in it. In the summer of 2005,  he flew home to catch an incoming south swell.  He dropped by his old station to see if there were any job openings. Luckily, there was a spot for a reporter, and he took it. Currently, Keahi serves as an Anchor for Hawaii News Now at 6, 6:30, and 10.
