John Torode ( Full name: John Douglas Torode MBE) is an Australian-British celebrity chef and TV presenter.  He relocated to the UK in the 1990s and started working at Conran Group’s restaurants.  John appeared on television for the first time on ITV’s This Morning. In 2005, he started presenting a revamped MasterChef on BBC One. 

He is currently a restaurateur and former owner of the Luxe and a second restaurant, Smiths of Smithfield. John has also written some cookbooks. He has written some of those cookbooks with fellow MasterChef presenter and judge, Gregg Wallace.

He is the youngest of three boys born in Melbourne, Victoria. John’s mother died when he was around 4 years. Between the ages of four and ten, the chef lived in Maitland, New South Wales, with his brother Andrew, and his grandmother. He learned how to cook from his grandmother From  Maitland, John went to live in Edithvale, Melbourne, with his father and his brothers.

His father was frequently away from home due to the nature of his work. John’s early cooking career started at Le Coq Au Vin restaurant in Aspendale. His later apprenticeship was at several establishments in Beaumaris, both located in Melbourne. John has said in an interview that the food in his childhood was fairly normal.

Until now, roast chicken remains one of his favorite dishes because of the connection to his childhood. However, his favorite meal at that time was crumbed lamb cutlets. Also, John has revealed that one of the first books he enjoyed at school was To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

He was previously married to his ex-wife Jessica. The two were hitched in  2000 and were later blessed with a son and daughter. However, the couple parted ways in 2014 after separating in 2011. John has ther two kids from previous relationships. Since 2015, John had been dating his girlfriend, Lisa Faulkner until October 24 2019 when they wedded at Aynhoe Park, Oxfordshire. She is an actress and Celebrity Masterchef winner. In 2022, John was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the  Birthday Honours for services to food and charity.

In 2020, John had a very eventful morning after he accidentally set his kitchen on fire while filming a live cooking demonstration for ITV’s This Morning. MasterChef judge was showing viewers how to make a McDonald’s classic, the sausage and egg McMuffin. John did the demonstration in the kitchen of his north London home, which he shares with his wife Lisa Faulkner. As the chef was prepping food on his kitchen island, the tea towel behind him on the cooker caught flames.

This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were trying their best to alert John to the flames behind him while in Studio. Willoughby spotted the fire first and alerted John by shouting ‘John, your tea towel’s on fire.’ Phillip started shouting soon enough ‘Your cooker’s on fire, your tea towel’s on fire! Behind you John, you’re on fire! Fire John!’

Due to a short delay in the live video link, the chef didn’t instantly realize what the panic. However, he soon turned around and saw the tea towel in flames. Calmly, John took it over to the sink, doused it with water to out the fire, and opened the back door. Willoughby was amazed at how calm the chef was. He was back in the kitchen shortly after and continued his demonstration only for a few seconds as the fire alarm came on. The hosts were left in hysterics with Willoughby saying ” Oh God I love this show so much”.

John Torode Pavlova

Pavlova is a perfect combination of crunchy yet gooey meringue, billowing cream, and an endless variety of toppings. There are several Pavlova recipes including passion fruit pavlova and tropical pavlova. Tropical pavlova is an indulgent dinner party dessert combining coconut and melty meringue.

Ingredients For the meringue
– 5 egg whites
– 300g caster sugar
– 1 tsp vanilla extract
– 1 tsp white wine or champagne vinegar
– 1 tsp cornflour
– 25g desiccated coconut

Method
– Heat the oven to 140C/120C fan/gas 1.
– To make the meringue, separate the egg whites into a clean bowl (save the yolks for another time)
– Add the sugar.
– Beat with an electric whisk for 8-10 mins, or until stiff and glossy. – Combine the vanilla, vinegar and cornflour in a separate bowl until smooth,
– Fold into the eggs along with the coconut.
– Place a piece of parchment paper or silicone paper over a baking sheet. – Spoon the meringue mix onto the sheet and smooth out to form a circle about 20-25cm wide,
– Swirl with a knife to make peaks around the edges.
– Cook for 1 hr until the meringue is crisp and lightly browned, then turn off the oven and leave to cool.
– Gently peel away the paper. Can be made up to two days ahead and carefully stored in an airtight container.
– To serve, whip the cream, crème fraîche, sugar and vanilla extract together until soft peaks form
– Spread over the centre of the meringue. Top with the fruit and serve.

The BBC television show MasterChef was relaunched in 2005  with an updated format and with John and Wallace as presenters. They both replaced Gary Rhodes. John was chosen instead of food critic AA Gill. The show had been sold to 25 countries by 2011. In some interviews, Joh has said that he enjoys that the show is unscripted and that the cameras are just there to capture the genuine interactions between the judges and the contestants.

Subsequently, the show spawned a spin-off called Celebrity MasterChef hosted by John and Wallace. John opened a restaurant called The Luxe in Spitalfields market, Commercial street, London, in October 2009. Under his leadership, turnover at the Luxe and Smiths of Smithfield reached £9.2 million. However, he later sold his shares and moved on from the two restaurants.

John has co-presented Junior MasterChef for some time now. He initially hosted the show along with Nadia Sawalha who is the former winner of Celebrity MasterChef.
