John McEnroe ( Full name: John Patrick McEnroe Jr. ) is an American former professional tennis player. He is best known for his shot-making and volleying skills, and his rivalries with Björn Borg and Jimmy Connors. During his playing career, John was confrontational on-court behavior, which frequently landed him in trouble with umpires and tennis authorities.

When John was about nine months old, the family moved to the Stewart Air Force Base in Newburgh, New York. His father had been transferred back to the US. After leaving the Air Force,  John’s father worked as an advertising agency during the day while attending Fordham Law School by night. The family moved to the Flushing neighborhood of the borough of Queens in New York City in 1961, then to Douglaston, also in Queens, the following year.
