Soon after leaving West Ham United, Hutchison joined Sheffield United in the Football League First Division under the management of Howard Kendall. However, after Kendall left to manage Everton, he made Hutchison one of his signings making him among a small group of players that have played for both rivals, Liverpool and Everton. He played for Everton from March 1998 to 2000.

Sunderland

Hutchison joined Sunderland in July 2000 in a deal worth £2.5 million. Here, he continued his good performance and was offered a big offer to be re-signed by West Ham United for £5 million. In February 2002, while in the field, Hutchison sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury. After recovery, he found himself out of favor and was unable to force his way back into the first team in the 2004–05 season.

Coventry City

West Ham released him at the beginning of 2005–06 and joined Millwall in August 2005. Upon joining, Hutchison struggled to secure a regular place in the starting XI, therefore, left the team by mutual consent in November 2005. He joined Coventry City in January 2006 and signed a contract until the end of the 2006–07 season and later signed an additional one-year deal in June 2006. Due to an ankle injury that restricted his appearances for the first team and was released at the end of the 2006–07 season.

Luton Town

His last team to participate in was Luton Town where he signed a one-year deal in July 2007. He was later released from the team at the end of the season after scoring once for Luton, in the Football League Trophy against Northampton Town. Hutchison turned down his two wage packets and offered to sponsor two youth team players from the 2008–09 season.
