John Macarthur Grace Community Church

It began as Grace Community Church of the Valley. Initially, the church was a  mission of the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood. On July 1, 1956, the congregation held its first public service where they called Don Householder to be its founding pastor. After a few years, the church relocated to its present location on Roscoe Boulevard and they began holding two Sunday morning services so that they could accommodate the growing congregation.

After the death of Householder in 1965, Richard Elvee became the pastor and the church expanded under his leadership. However, Richard died in 1968 and John assumed the pastorate in February 1969. During his early days with the ministry, the church doubled in size every two years leading to the building of the Family Life Center in 1971. Also,  a new Worship Center came up in 1977.  Moody Monthly magazine published an article that featured the congregation in 1972. The article was titled “The church with nine hundred ministers”

In August 2020,  the church leaders broke local health orders by not wearing masks and keeping social distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The State of California and Los Angeles County tried to prevent the church from holding large indoor services during the COVID-19 pandemic. The legal battles began as a result of the faith-driven defiance. The church was represented by the Senior Legal Advisor Jenna Ellis to the Trump 2020 Campaign.

The County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works sent a notice to the church in September 2020. The notice informed them of the termination of the church’s parking lot lease based along the water viaduct. The church had held the place since 1975 and their Lawyers said that the move by the county was because of the church’s decision to continue holding indoor worship services even in the midst of the pandemic. However, those restrictions were lifted on November 12, 2020.
