He served as a sports reporter in WBNS-TV also known as Channel 10 News from 1998 to 2009. He was to leave Channel and join WRAL in Raleigh, North Carolina for a similar job. While he was in WNBS as the main sports reporter, Jeff was moved to the news side where he anchored the weekday morning news until he switched in January where he anchored weekend evenings.

Jeff Hogan was injured as he was body surfing at the coast over the weekend. He was enjoying his day at the beach when he hit a sand bar while he was body surfing and had to be rescued. Luckily, he was saved by his daughters. The accident left him temporarily paralyzed. Holding his breath helped him float otherwise he would have sunk and be swept out thus the end of his life.
Jeff remembered seeing a white light-type thing and then saw things get real quiet and heard bubbles of the waves rushing by. He said his limbs were floating and felt like was in cement or a cage that he could not break out of. Having his daughters help him, people from the shore rushed to help pull him to safety.

Jeff stated that the accident was not a red flag situation but a freak accident in a weird spot. Jeff had to take a forced leave and return to the anchor desk weeks later.
