Hoda Kotb is a popular American broadcast journalist, and author. Currently, she works as a co-host of the NBC News morning show Today and co-host of its entertainment-focused fourth hour. As an author, Hoda has released around seven books. Her book Ten Years Later was published on January 15, 2013.

Before, Hoda was a correspondent for the television news magazine program Dateline NBC. Her first on-air job following college was at then-CBS affiliate WXVT in Greenville, Mississippi. Later on, Hoda moved to ABC affiliate WQAD in Moline, Illinois as a reporter from 1988 until 1989.

She worked as a weekend anchor and reporter at CBS affiliate WINK in Fort Myers, Florida from 1989 until 1991. From 1992 until 1998, Hoda served as an anchor and reporter at CBS affiliate WWL in New Orleans, Louisiana. She received the Edward R. Murrow Award for her reporting in 2002. In 2003 and 2008, Hoda earned her first Gracie Award.

Early Life And Education

She was born in Norman, Oklahoma, to Egyptian Muslim parents Sameha (“Sami”) and Abdel Kader Kotb. Hoda was raised in Morgantown, West Virginia. During the 1990s, she resides in New Orleans. She and her family resided in Egypt for a year and in Nigeria. Hoda has two siblings Adel and Hala. Her mom served at the Library of Congress.

Hoda’s father Abdel worked as a a fossil energy specialist. He was listed in the Who’s Who of Technology. In 1985, Abdel died at the age of 52. Hoda holds American nationality and belongs to Egyptian ethnicity. She attended Fort Hunt High School and graduated in 1982. Hoda later joined Virginia Tech. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism in 1986.

On April 29, 2023, Today co-host Hoda poked fun at co-host Jenna Bush Hager as she accused her of ‘practically proposing’ to her husband Henry as soon as she met him. The two were discussing Keith Urban’s comments about asking Nicole Kidman out, when Jenna, started reminiscing about when she met Henry during the 2004 presidential campaign.


She is the co-anchor of NBC News’ TODAY and the co-host of TODAY’s fourth hour. In September 2007, Hoda was the first host of Today’s first fourth-hour weekday morning broadcast at 10:00 a.m. In April 2008, she was joined by Kathie Lee Gifford as a co-host. Kathie afterward was replaced by Jenna Bush Hager in April 2019, after her departure from the show. On February 23, 2015, Hoda started hosting a live, one-hour show twice a week on Sirius XM’s Today channel, talking casual, water cooler topics.

She was raised together with her two siblings by her mom Sameha Kotb and dad Abdel Kader Kotb. Her parents are from Egypt. Hoda’s mom served in the Library of Congress for more than 30 years. She talked about her gratitude for her parents who immigrated to the United States from Egypt, and how her dad led by example. Although Abdel wasn’t president of the country, he was the president of his own company.
