David Ono ( Full name: David Johnston) is an American journalist and a Japanese American filmmaker. He currently serves as a news anchor for KABC-TV Channel 7 based in Los Angeles, California. David co-anchors the ABC7 Eyewitness News at 4 and 6 p.m. along with Ellen Leyva. Also, he serves as a fill-in anchor for co-anchor Marc Brown at 5 and 11 P.M. Although he was born in Japan, David moved to the United States with his family at the age of one year.
Since moving to California, David has embraced his biracial heritage and became so much involved in the Asian American Journalists Association. Before joining his current station, David worked at KOVR, KDBC-TV, KOSA-TV, and KXAS-TV. He joined ABC’s Los Angeles O&O KABC-TV in 1996 and had a chance to interview USA former President Barack Obama.
Outside of broadcasting, David has produced many documentaries chronicling the Asian American as well as the immigrant experience. He prepared a documentary about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II as well as Phan Thi Kim Phuc, the “Napalm girl” from the Vietnam War. He also collaborated with Jeff MacIntyre to create the documentary called The Legacy of Heart Mountain about the Japanese internment camp Heart Mountain Relocation Center. In the documentary, David personally interviewed some survivors, including judge Lance Ito’s mother.
