Before joining CNN and Harvard Kennedy School, David was serving as the White House Adviser to four United States Presidents both from the Republican and Democrat Parties; Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Clinton. He has documented his experiences while working at the White House in the New York Bestseller; Eyewitness to Power: The Essence of Leadership, Nixon to Clinton (Simon & Schuster, 2001).

He is the founder of the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard Kennedy School where he serves as the professor for public service for more than a decade. While serving as a professor at Harvard, David has been able to work closely with the rising generation of young leaders such as  Military veterans, social entrepreneurs, and Young  Global Leaders selected by the World Economic Forum.
