Chris Thile is an American mandolinist, songwriter, singer, composer, and radio personality. He is best known for his work in the acoustic folk and progressive bluegrass quintet Punch Brothers and the progressive acoustic trio Nickel Creek. Chris is a 2012 MacArthur Fellow.
In October 2016, he started hosting the radio variety show A Prairie Home Companion, which in December 2017 became renamed Live from Here.

At the age of four, Chris’ family moved to Idyllwild. He started playing the mandolin at the age of five, taking occasional lessons from John Moore. At age eight, Thile’s family and the Watkins family formed Nickel Creek. At age twelve, Chris received the mandolin championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas.

When Chris’ family and Watkin’s family formed Nickel Creek, they performed at many California bluegrass festivals, and as a result, he had to be home-schooled. Later, Chris enrolled at Murray State University for a few semesters, where he was a music major.
Chris Thile Tour
To promote “Punch”, Chris and Punch Brothers planned a year-long tour in 2008, as well as a February 29 appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. On February 15, 2010, Punch Brothers released Antifogmatic and continued to tour. On November 5, 2010, the band performed “Rye Whiskey” on The Late Show with David Letterman with Steve Martin guesting on banjo.
In 2014, Chris recorded a new collaborative album with Edgar Meyer entitled Bass & Mandolin and began a tour with Meyer to support the album. Additionally, in 2014, he reunited with Nickel Creek to release a new album called A Dotted Line in celebration of their 25th anniversary. The group also embarked on a national tour titled NC25.

At age eight, Chris’ family and the Watkins family formed Nickel Creek. The band performed at many California bluegrass festivals. In 2007, he formed The Tensions Mountain Boys band then changed the name to Punch Brothers. The band consisted of Chris(mandolin), Chris Eldridge (guitar), Gabe Witcher (fiddle/violin), Greg Garrison (bass), and Noam Pikelny (banjo).
Chris Thile Live From Here | Prairie Home Companion
Chris made his first appearance on Garrison Keillor’s radio show A Prairie Home Companion in 1996, at age 15, and returned numerous times—as a solo artist. On July 21, 2015, Keillor left the show and Chris succeed him as a permanent host in 2016. His first show took place on October 15, 2016, at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul.
On December 16, 2017, at the Town Hall theater in New York, Chris announced that the show would thenceforth be named Live from Here. It continued airing live on Public Radio until its final show, on May 30, 2020. On June 14, 2020, the show became canceled by Minnesota Public Radio as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic
