Butch was first drafted in the 51 positions overall during the 1969 NHL Entry Draft this was after the completion of his junior career with the Dauphin Kings of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Between 1971 and 1970 he played for the Los Angles and their Springfield Kings and AHL. Moreover, in 1971 they won the Calder Cup championship along with his teammates.

Between 1975 to 1976Butch competed against Boston Bruins where he scored the overtime game-winning goal in games 2 and game 6. In 1978 he became the first player to win the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy and Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. Moreover, he got a five-year contract with the World Hockey Association’s Edmonton Oilers that cost $1 million but countered with an offer of $1.25-million over the same term.

In addition, Butch moved to the New York Islanders’ 1980 season in exchange for Dave Lewis and Billy Harris. During the season he leads the team to win four consecutive Stanley Cups scoring 19 points in 21 playoffs. Between 1980 to 1981 he won the Conn Smythe Trophy scoring 10 goals and 10 assists in 20 playoff games.

Butch retired from the NHL team in 1985. He was the team’s head coach for half the season and was fired in 1987. Butch also played for the NHL team Nova Scotia Oilers before retiring for good. In addition, he retired in 1987 having played 1,107 games, with 375 goals and 513 assists for 888 points.
