Shep Messing ( Full name: Shep Norman Messing) is an American former soccer goalkeeper. Currently, he is a broadcaster who works for New York Red Bulls matches as the lead analyst on the MSG Network. Shep became the chairman of the Major Arena Soccer League in 2021.

He played six seasons in the Major Indoor Soccer League and also seven seasons in the North American Soccer League. Shep is a former member of the United States national team. He was their member at the 1971 Pan American Games as well as the 1972 Summer Olympics.

He was born to his parents  Mr. and Mrs. Elias Messing on October 9, 1949, in Bronx, New York, United States, and raised in Roslyn, New York. Shep is Jewish and his mother was a daughter of a Russian furniture maker and his Latvian wife. She taught physical education at Nassau Community College. On the other hand, Shep’s dad was a lawyer and worked in Manhattan. His paternal grandfather originated from Riga, Latvia.

Shep was raised up along with his younger brother called Roy. Just like Shep, Roy is also a 63-year-old American retired soccer goalkeeper born on March 4, 1958. Roy played in the North American Soccer League as well as Major Indoor Soccer League. Currently, he serves as  Senior Managing Director at Ankura Consulting Group.

He broadcasted the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany for ESPN, the 2002 FIFA World Cup from South Korea/Japan, as well as the 1986 FIFA World Cup from Mexico. Also, Shep has been the main analyst for the MetroStars as well as the re-branded New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer. He has been working on radio and tv since 2001.

Also, he has been the color analyst for 2002, 2006, and 2010 FIFA World Cups for ESPN. At the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics, he served as an analyst for NBC Sports coverage of Soccer8. Now, Shep is a color commentator for soccer on the MSG Network and also ONE World Sports.

At Wheatley High School is where he started playing soccer. In college, Shep played on the school’s men’s soccer team and was a two-time second-team All-American. After graduating from college, Shep joined the U.S. national team that played in the 1971 Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia. He played at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich with the U.S. team. However, The U.S. went 0-2-1 in group play and failed to qualify for the second round. Shep manned the net in the U.S.’s third game of the games, a 7-0 loss to West Germany.

From his room, The Munich Massacre took place 30 yards but Shep was protected along with 12 other Jewish members of the US Olympic delegation. Shep received offers from teams in Mexico and Germany after the Olympics. However, he was invited to play for the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League (NASL). There, his teammates would eventually include Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, and Giorgio Chinaglia as well
