Bakari Sellers (Full name: Bakari T. Sellers) is an American attorney, politician, political commentator, and podcaster. He works for CNN as a political analyst. At the age of 22 years, he became the youngest member of the South Carolina State legislature. In addition, Sellers was the youngest African-American elected official in the country, after defeating a 26-year-old incumbent State Representative.

He later vacated his seat in 2014, South Carolina House of Representatives to run for Lieutenant Governor that year, but unfortunately lost to Henry McMaster. Moreover, he was succeeded in the House by Justin T. Bamberg.

Sellers served on President Barack Obama’s South Carolina steering committee during the 2008 election and was the first vice-chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party. In addition, he was featured in TIME magazine “40 under 40” in 2010 as well as “The Root 100” a list of distinguished African Americans.

The process was very emotional for Sellers and his family since he couldn’t donate a part of his liver due to his size. He is the step-dad of Kai Mitchelle.

In addition, Sellers became emotional while discussing the donor process which excluded him from donating part of his liver to Sadie due to his size. Fortunately, the liver transplant was successfully done when Sadie was eight months old. He has written the book, My Vanishing Country: A Memoir, a book that was released on May 19, 2020. In his book, Seller narrates about the forgotten black working class throughout his life. The working class is forgotten simply because it cannot access social amenities such as clean water, a community hospital, and more than one grocery store. Additionally, he authored the book with an aim of initiating informed dialogues that go beyond media sensitized incidents of racism.

The book also explains the loss that he experienced after losing the lieutenant governor of South Carolina, his personal battles with anxiety and the dreadful death of a dear friend and eight other innocent African Americans in the Mother Emmanuel church shooting.

It also highlights the 1968 Orangeburg Massacre at South Carolina State University, where three unarmed black men were killed and his own father was shot and imprisoned with the accusations of inciting a rampage.
