In 1985, Bruce started drawing weekly cartoons for The Chronicle Herald in Halifax and became employed full-time in 1986, replacing a space on the paper’s editorial page that had been present ever since the leaving of its long-time cartoonist Bob Chambers in 1976. Having remade the Herald’s weekend edition in April 2013, Bruce’s hand-drawn font was applied to all the headlines in the “Opinion” section.
Since working as the paper’s frequent cartoonist, Bruce has got status as one of Canada’s finest editorial cartoonists, awarded by the Canadian Encyclopedia, as “among the new breed of distinguished artists” in Canadian editorial cartooning. To now, Bruce has received 18 Atlantic Journalism Awards due to editorial cartooning, and seven National Newspaper Awards (1992, 1993, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2022), such as the NNA inaugural Journalist of the Year award for 2014.
Bruce came in second in the World Press Cartoon competition in 2004. In 2014, he received the World Press Freedom Award and in 2015 won their Honourable Mention. Bruce also received the second prize during the 2014 Niels Bugge Cartoon Award. Both a famous and at times contentious cartoonist, Bruce was named Best Political Cartoonist in Halifax for many years running by The Coast newspaper prior to it exalting him to their Hall of Fame, thus leaving him from the further contest.
