He served as an assistant and special consultant to former U.S. Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan. Pat was the original host of CNN’s Crossfire. Pat sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1992 and 1996 against incumbent president George H.W. Bush.
