Yvonne Orji ( Full name: Yvonne Anuli Orji) is a Nigerian-American comedian and actress. She has been appearing in the television series titled Insecure since 2016. For her role in the series, Yvonne was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award and also three NAACP Image Awards. The Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria native was raised in Laurel, Maryland in the United States of America.
Yvonne’s parents expected her to become either an engineer, pharmacist, lawyer, or doctor. To their surprise, Yvonne was inspired to do comedy while she was a graduate student after performing stand-up in the talent portion of a beauty pageant. She graduated in 2009 and immediately moved to New York City where she pursued a career in comedy. Without an agent or any real acting experience, Yvonne landed the role of Molly in the TV series titled Insecure in 2015. She has been starting in the series since 2016.
In 2021, Yvonne started developing a series for Disney+ titled First Gen. The series, produced by Oprah Winfrey and David Oyelowo is based on Yvonne’s personal life. She spent six months between 2008 and 2009 working with an NGO that utilizes social marketing in the adoption of healthy behaviors called Population Services International (PSI) in post-conflict Liberia.
While there, Yvonne worked with a group of talented youth to help build a mentoring program and also establish a weekly talk show program that helped to educate and also prevent the spread of teen pregnancy and HIV/AIDS as well. Currently, Yvonne lends her time and voice as an R(ED) Ambassador and a Literacy Champion for Jumpstart. Additionally, she works with JetBlue for Good.
