Tom Basden ( Full name: Thomas William Basden) is an English comedy writer and actor. He is a member of the British four-man sketch group Cowards. Tom has written and performed extensively for comedy shows on the BBC and Channel 4. He often collaborates in two-man shows with a fellow Cowards member called Tim Key.

He attended an independent school for boys in Wimbledon in South-West London called   King’s College School. Tom was in the same year as fellow actors Khalid Abdalla and Ben Barnes. He later joined Pembroke College, Cambridge. Tom served as the vice president of Cambridge Footlights. His contemporaries included Sarah Solemani, Stefan Golaszewski, Dan Stevens, and Tim Key. The latter pretended to be studying for a Ph.D. at Cambridge to be part of a Footlights production.

Cowards refer to a British four-man comedy act that is made up of Tim Key, Stefan Golaszewski, Tom, and Lloyd Woolf. The team has created eponymous radio and TV series of their sketch comedy. They all met at Cambridge University’s Footlights Dramatic Club where they worked together. Golaszewski, Tom, and Woolf performed in a show directed by Key and Mark Watson. Later, it was revealed that Key was not studying at Cambridge University and that he had misled society when auditioning.

He wrote a play Party in 2010 about a group of university students holding a meeting to found their own political party. The play was performed at the Arts Theatre in London. Brian Logan wrote for The Guardian where he gave the play a four out of a possible five stars. He  described it as “an idiosyncratic and highly enjoyable piece performed beautifully by a crack cast of upcoming comics.”

Dominic Cavendish wrote for The Daily Telegraph and called the play “astute (and) stingingly amusing”. Julia McKenzie produced a radio adaptation of the play that was broadcast on Radio 4 for three series and a Christmas special from 2010 to 2018. In addition to writing the adaptation,  Tom appeared in the play, alongside  Jonny Sweet, Tim Key, Anna Crilly, and Katy Wix. Tom wrote a play titled  Joseph K which is based on Franz Kafka’s novel The Trial.

The play stars Tim Key. He was longlisted for the 2011 Evening Standard Theatre Awards Most Promising Playwright. The same play received positive reviews from The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph. Tom wrote a play in 2011 titled There Is a War for the National Theatre’s Double Feature. It starrs himself and Phoebe Fox. Also, he co-wrote the Channel 4 sitcom Fresh Meat. The play earned him a nomination for the 2012 BAFTA Craft Awards Break-Through Talent Award.
