Thomas Friedman Biography | Wiki

Thomas Friedman is an American author, writer, journalist, and political commentator. He currently works for the New York Times. Thomas is a weekly columnist for The New York Times. After completing his master’s degree, Thomas went to join the London bureau of United Press International. A year later, he was taken to Beirut. There, he covered the Lebanon Civil War from June 1979 to May 1981.

In 1981,  Thomas was hired by The New York Times as a reporter. He re-dispatched to Beirut at the start of the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. There, Thomas covered the war, especially the Sabra and Shatila massacre. His reporting won him the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting along with David K. Shipler. Thomas also won the George Polk Award due to his foreign reporting.

He was transferred to Jerusalem in June 1984 where he worked as the New York Times Jerusalem Bureau Chief until February 1988. While there,  Thomas won his second Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. The award cited his coverage of the First Palestinian Intifada. He later published a book, From Beirut to Jerusalem which described his experiences in the Middle East. Again, the book won the 1989 U.S. National Book Award for Nonfiction.

He was born to his mother Margaret Blanche and his father Harold Abe Friedman. Harold served as the vice president of a ball-bearing company called United Bearing. However, died of a heart attack in 1973 when Thomas reached the nineteen years mark. His mother Margaret served in the United States Navy during World War II and had a degree in Home Economics from the University of Wisconsin. She was a homemaker, a part-time bookkeeper, as well as a Senior Life Master duplicate bridge player. On a sad note, she died in 2008. Thomas grew up along with his two older sisters namely  Shelly and Jane.

He currently works for the New York Times as a column writer.  In 1992, Thomas covered  James Baker as the Secretary of State during the administration of President George H. W. Bush. After the election of Bill Clinton, he was employed as the White House correspondent for the New York Times. In 1994, he started writing about foreign policy and economics, and even moved to the op-ed page of The New York Times the following year, his role now changed to be a foreign affairs columnist.

In 2002, Thomas won the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary as a result of his work titled “clarity of vision, based on extensive reporting, in commenting on the worldwide impact of the terrorist threat.” In February 2002, Thomas came into contact with the then Saudi Crown Prince called Abdullah. As an adviser, he encouraged the Prince to make a comprehensive attempt to end the conflict between Arab and Israeli.

Thomas advised the Prince to normalize Arab relations with Israel by returning the refugees alongside an end to the Israel territorial occupations. At the Beirut Summit in March the same year, Abdullah proposed the Arab Peace Initiative and Thomas has strongly supported the initiative since then. The 2004 Overseas Press Club Award went to Thomas due to his lifetime achievement. In the same year, Queen Elizabeth II named him to the Order of the British Empire.
