Terry Teachout was an American librettist, stage director, playwright, biographer,  critic,  and author. He served as the drama critic of The Wall Street Journal. At the same time, Terry served as the critic-at-large of Commentary and the author of a column titled “Sightings.” The column mainly talked about the arts in America published in The Wall Street Journal twice a week.

Terry worked as a blogger at About Last Night. In addition, he wrote about the arts for many other newspapers and magazines such as National Review and  The New York Times. Apart from that, Terry served as a regular panelist on a monthly podcast, Three on the Aisle, about theater in America. The American Theatre magazine hosted the podcast from September 2017 to December 2021.

He was born to his parents Herbert H. “Bert” Teachout and Evelyn Teachout (née Crosno) on February 6, 1956, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, United States of America. His father served as a hardware salesman while his mother was a secretary. Terry grew up as the firstborn son of the couple in Sikeston, Missouri.

He served as a drama critic of The Wall Street Journal and the critic-at-large of the magazine Commentary prior to his death.

As James Gavin wrote for the New York Times Book Review, he called Duke a “clear-eyed reassessment of a man regarded in godlike terms”
