Stephanie Izard is an American celebrity chef and television personality. She became known as the first female chef to win Bravo’s Top Chef. Stephanie took the title during the fourth season of the show. She is the co-owner of three award-winning Chicago restaurants, Little Goat, Girl and the Goat, and Duck Duck Goat where she serves as the executive chef.

Stephanie opened her first restaurant, Scylla ( currently closed)  at the age of 27 and served as its chef-owner. In 2013, she received a James Beard Foundation Award for “Best Chef: Great Lakes” for her work at Girl and the Goat. Stephanie has made numerous appearances on Top Chef since her win. She has appeared on the show as a  guest judge in subsequent seasons and as a participant in Top Chef Duels. She competed in the Food Network series Iron Chef Gauntlet in 2017. Stephanie overall defeated chefs Bobby Flay, Masaharu Morimoto, and Michael Symon to obtain the title of Iron Chef.

Scylla was a 50-seat restaurant named for the Greek mythological creature Scylla.  It offered a menu emphasizing seafood, as well as a sweet-savory interplay with dishes such as lobster-stuffed profiteroles and grouper with sweet corn risotto and lobster sauce

The restaurant’s reviews and awards included “Best New Restaurants 2005” from Chicago Magazine,  three stars from the Chicago Tribune, and “Ten Best Small U.S. Restaurants” from Bon Appétit Magazine. However, Scylla was closed in August 2007. Stephanie met future business partners Kevin Boehm and Rob Katz of the BOKA Restaurant Group in the wake of her Top Chef win.

In the summer of 2010, the trio eventually opened Girl & the Goat in Chicago’s West Loop. Girl & the Goat is a 130-seat restaurant that features an eclectic menu showcasing Mediterranean influences and “nose-to-tail” cooking. The restaurant emphasizes the use of offal alongside traditional cuts of meat. In the first-ever restaurant review of Saveur magazine, it dubbed Girl & the Goat “America’s Best New Restaurant”.

In 2011, Girl & the Goat was nominated for the James Beard Award (Best New Restaurant).  Food & Wine magazine named Stephanie a “Best New Chef” in the same year. She announced in March 2011 that she would be teaming up with the BOKA restaurant group to open a second restaurant called Little Goat. This restaurant was an opportunity for Stephanie to expand the Girl & The Goat’s burgeoning bread program.

Little Goat offers upscale diner food and all-day breakfast. The chef announced in February 2015 the opening of the third restaurant called Duck Duck Goat in Chicago’s Fulton-Randolph Market District. Stephanie opened her second Girl & the Goat in July 2021 located in Los Angeles. This restaurant is the first of her restaurants that is outside of Chicago.

She signed on to the Chicago-based fourth season of Bravo’s “Top Chef” around the time of Scylla’s closing. Stephanie ultimately won the competition and become the show’s first female winner claiming a $100,000 prize. Stephanie won two “Quickfire” challenges, and five elimination challenges over the course of the season. Also, she was in the top eleven out of fourteen episodes.

Stephanie chose Eric Ripert in the Puerto Rico-based finale, to assist with her prep work in preparing a four-course tasting menu for judging. It prevailed over the menus offered by fellow contestants Lisa Fernandes and Richard Blais. Stephanie won the title of “Fan Favorite” on the Top Chef Season 4 Reunion Special, receiving a $10,000 prize in addition to her Top Chef title and prizes.

Stephanie was the only “Top Chef” winner to also win Fan Favorite until Kelsey Barnard Clark of season 16 and Melissa King of season 17. She was featured in an episode of Hulu’s A Day in the Life TV series in April 2012. The episode followed her for an entire day while she worked at her restaurant.  There is a planning meeting about halfway through the episode to discuss the development of Stephanie’s new restaurant Little Goat.

Also, Stephanie made an appearance on Food Network’s Iron Chef America. She competed against Iron Chef Michael Symon in a head-to-head bread competition but she ultimately lost to Michael. In the first season of Iron Chef Gauntlet in 2017, Stephaie won through the final round and defeated Iron Chefs Masaharu Morimoto, Bobby Flay, and Michael Symon. She earned the title Iron Chef in the process.
