Slavoj Žižek is a Slovenian philosopher, public intellectual, and cultural theorist. He currently serves as an international director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities at the University of London. Also, Slavoj is a visiting professor at New York University as well as a senior researcher at the University of Ljubljana’s Department of Philosophy. Mainly, Slavoj works on continental philosophy especially Hegelianism, psychoanalysis, and Marxism.
Slavoj has written more than books in multiple languages. The idiosyncratic style of his public appearances, academic works, and frequent magazine op-eds are characterized by the use of obscene jokes and pop-cultural examples. Also, his politically incorrect provocations have gained him fame, criticism, and controversy both in and outside academia.
Foreign Policy listed Slavoj on its list of Top 100 Global Thinkers in 2012 calling him “a celebrity philosopher”. Elsewhere, Slavoj has been dubbed “the most dangerous philosopher in the West” and the “Elvis of cultural theory.” He has been called “the foremost exponent of Lacanian theory” and “the leading Hegelian of our time.” Professors David J. Gunkel and Paul A. Taylor founded a journal called the International Journal of Žižek Studies to engage with his work.

He enrolled at the University of Ljubljana in 1967 during an era of liberalization in Titoist Yugoslavia. Slavoj studied philosophy and sociology. He frequented the circles of dissident intellectuals, including Ivo Urbančič, the Heideggerian philosophers, and Tine Hribar. Slavoj published articles in alternative magazines, such as Tribuna, Praxis, and Problemi which he also edited. He accepted a job as an assistant researcher with the promise of tenure in 1971.
However, he was dismissed after the authorities denounced his Master’s thesis as being “non-Marxist”. Slavoj graduated from the University of Ljubljan with a Doctor of Arts in Philosophy in 1981. His dissertation was called The Theoretical and Practical Relevance of French Structuralism. Slavoj spent his next few years in what was described as a “professional wilderness.” He as well fulfilled his legal duty of undertaking national service in the Yugoslav army in Karlovac for a period of one year.

This was his first book in English that was decisive in the introduction of the Ljubljana School’s thought to English-speaking audiences.
