Shmuley Boteach ( Full name: Jacob Shmuel ” Boteach) is an American author, Orthodox Jewish rabbi, and TV host.  He has authored  31 books, including the bestseller Kosher Sex: A Recipe for Passion & Intimacy, and Kosher Jesus. Shmuley hosted the prime-time television series titled Shalomin the Home for two seasons.

The show was one of TLC’s highest-rated shows of the time.  Shmuley’s outspokenness has earned him praise and criticism. He was referred to as “the most famous rabbi in America,”. The Washington Post referred. Newsweek named Shmuley as one of the 10 most influential rabbis in the United States. He was also named as one of the 50 most influential Jews in the world by The Jerusalem Post.

Shmuley Boteach Family

He was born and raised by his parents in  Los Angeles, California. Shmuley grew up in Los Angeles and in  Miami, Florida. His parents brought him up in a  Modern Orthodox Jewish home. Shmuley has four older siblings. His father Yoav Botach (without the “e”) was born in 1937   in Iran as a second-born in a family of 13 children.

Yoav grew up a Jewish boy fighting local Muslim anti-semites. He lived in Israel, prior to coming to the United States. Shmuleyl’s mother Eleanor was an American tourist when she met Yoav in Israel. Yoav and Eleanor divorced when Shmuley was eight years old. Shmuley told his parents that he wanted them to reunite for his bar mitzvah present.

He went to Chabad camp and fell in love with Judaism where The Lubavitcher Rebbe became his patron. At the age of 13, Shmuleyl joined the Chabad movement ( aka “Lubavitch,” ) This movement is a Hasidic philosophy that traces back 250 years to Lubavitch, Russia) He decided he wanted to become a rabbi when he was only 14 to help heartbroken people.

Shmuley studied at a series of yeshivas in Los Angeles, New York, and Jerusalem, Israel (for three years at Torat Emet Yeshiva). He was then chosen as one of ten Chabad students sent to Sydney, Australia, to start a yeshiva.

He is married to a beutiful woman called Debbie Boteach. The couple celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on March 14, 2018. Shmuley met Debbie’s parents while in Sydne and he met her wife when he was only 21 years old. They married in Sydney in 1988 and later Shmuley returned to New York and took semicha (rabbinical ordination). He and his Australian wife Debbie had nine children by 2019, six of them were born in England. Currently, the family lives in Englewood, New Jersey, United States of America.

He hosted the one-hour prime-time television series, Shalom, in the Home in 2006 and 2007. The show ran for two seasons on the TLC network. Shalom was a reality show in which Shmuley counseled dysfunctional families and gave advice to struggling couples regarding their relationships and parenting. The show attracted about 700,000 viewers per episode. It also became one of the cable network’s highest-rated shows.

Shmuley wrote a book with the same name in 2007 based on the TV series. The National Fatherhood Initiative gaveShmuley its highest award for his efforts in the television series in 2007. After the series ended, he remained in contact with the families as he counseled them, and had them over to his home. Shmuley was featured in an episode of the Sundance Channel’s Dream School reality television series in 2014.

was a non-fiction original series, which introduced troubled teen high school dropouts to mentors, so as to inspire the teenagers to turn their lives around. He has served as the host of a weekly nationally syndicated radio program called The Shmuley Show on WABC. The show aired on Sunday evenings from 7-9 p.m. Also, Shmuley serves as the host of his own daily talk radio show on the “Oprah and Friends” network on her XM radio channel.

He has written syndicated columns for  The Huffington Post as well as The Jerusalem Post. Shmuley is an op-ed contributor to The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and other newspapers. Shmuley entered into an agreement with the creator of online dating site Jdate called MatchNet in March 2000, to become its spokesman for three years, for an annual salary and stock options.

The company sought to renegotiate  Shmuley’s contract at a lower salary after its initial public offering. According to his lawsuit, he was terminated right even before his stock options were vested when he refused to renegotiate his agreement  Shmuley claimed that MatchNet hired him to add legitimacy to its public offering. However, the company never intended to fulfill its promises.
