Sarah Kaufman is an American journalist and author. She currently serves as the dance critic for the Washington Post. Sarah won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. The Art of Grace was her most recent work published in 2015  by W.W. Norton and Company. Sarah studied dance but eventually gave it up while in graduate school. She then joined journalism after complaining to the Washington City Paper about their lack of dance reviews. Sarah then started writing reviews for that publication.

In the 1990s, Sarah and her husband relocated to Munich, Germany. There, she worked as a translator as well as an author of freelance English-language cultural and also journalism pieces. When Sarah and her husband returned to the US, she started freelancing for the Post. When Alan M. Kriegsman, the post-dance critic and Pulitzer-winner, ( Sarah referred to him as “my hero, friend, and mentor”) retired in 1996, Sarah now becomes the critic.

While still writing for the Post, she covered a story that revealed many of Martha Graham’s works were in the public domain. Sarah won a Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Award for Arts and Entertainment Reporting due to her coverage of the decreasing number of ballet offerings for the Performing Arts at the John F. Kennedy Center
