Burns is also the co-producer and director of the documentary film The Central Park Five which she co-produced and directed with her father Ken Burns and her husband David McMahon.
For her work on Central Park Five, Burns received several awards including Outstanding Achievement by a Woman in the Film Industry, and Black Film Critics Circle Awards – Best Documentary among others. Additionally, she was nominated for best Non-Fiction film of 2012 by the New York Film Critics Circle, Peabody Award, Alliance of Women Film Journalists, and Writers Guild of America Award for Best Documentary Screenplay.
