Samia Suluhu ( Full name Samia Hassan Suluhuis) is a Tanzanian political leader. She is currently a designated President of Tanzania. Suluhu assumed office following the death of John Magufuli as the President of Tanzania on 17 March 2021. She was elected as Tanzania’s first female vice-President during the 2015 General election in Tanzania.

Suluhu won the election through the CCM ticket along with John Magufuli. In 2020, Suluhu and Magufuli were re-elected to a second term. Before she was elected as the vice-president, Suluhu served as the Member of Parliament for the Makunduchi constituency for 5 years since 2010. In Addition, Suluhu also worked as the Minister of State in the Office of Vice-Presidents for Union Affairs since 2010.

Before this, she worked as a minister in the semi-autonomous region of Zanzibar in the administration of then-President Amani Karume. She won as the Vice-Chairperson of the Constituent Assembly in 2014. There, she drafted the country’s new constitution. Suluhu addressed the nation on Wednesday 18/3/2021, stating that Magufuli had died from heart complications that had bothered him for a decade.

Suluhu said that burial arrangements were underway but she did not indicate the date that she would be sworn in. Magufuli went missing from the public on Feb. 27, 2021. There were sparking rumors he was suffering from COVID-19. However, on March 12, His officials denied the rumors and Suluhu pleaded with the Tanzanian citizens not to listen to rumors from outside the country.

Suluhu then graduated with an advanced diploma in public administration from the Institute of Development Management (now known as Mzumbe University) in 1986.

After graduating,  Suluhu worked for the World Food Programme. From 1992 to 1994, she was studying at the University of Manchester. Later on, Suluhu graduated with a postgraduate diploma in economics. In addition, she holds an MSc in Community Economic Development. Suluhu obtained the MSc through a joint program between the Southern New Hampshire University and the Open University of Tanzania in 2015.

Previously, she worked as a  Minister of State, and Vice President in the office of Union Affairs. Her role was to draft the new constitution of Tanzania.

In July 2015,  John Magufuli as the CCM’s presidential nominee chose Suluhu as his running mate for the 2015 presidential general election.  Magufuli’s decision made Suluhu the first female running mate in Tanzania and in the party’s history. Upon Magufuli’s victory in the election, she became the first female vice-president in the history of  Tanzania. Following  Magufuli’s death on 17 March 2021, Suluhu became the 6th  President and the first female president in Tanzania.

His  18-day absence from the public drew speculation concerning his health. The opposition urged for an immediate swearing-in of vice president Suluhu as  Magufuli’s successor to avoid a constitutional vacuum and prevent any uncertainty. The Tanzania constitution states that Suluhu should assume the presidency and serve the remaining part of the five-year term.
